I must admit that this is by far the coolest toy I have ever seen that captures the BB-8 Droid from the movie and brings it to life perfectly. Now while there are many different versions of BB-8 out there this one is the one that’s controlled by an App on your phone and trust me that this is the one you want forget the other ones as they pale in comparison to this power house.
Whats in the Box?
The only thing cooler than owning this thing is unboxing it, inside the box you will find: A quick start guide, the BB-8 droid,Documentation, USB cable,Charging base. I must commend sphero on the great packaging as there is a foam insert and plastic mold to cover the droid and the packing of the box is well designed and looks great.
Getting started
All you have to do is take it out of the box and plug the charging base into a USB hub to power the device, assemble the BB-8 droid.Then place the Droid on the charging base and download the App to your smartphone and from here you are on your way to some real life Star Wars fun.
How well does BB-8 control?
The BB-8 App-Enabled Droid can dart about the house or backyard pavement as its rotating spherical base spins and mesmerizes you as its head somehow remains stationary while in motion or moves independent of its body which is a amazing feet for a toy, I wonder how they were able to capture this feature from what we have seen from the Star Wars trailers.It can either move on its own or with the aid of your smartphone to control its main functions.
The App is fun and has a great startup which should resonate with fans that makes you feel as if you are in the Star Wars universe. Once you have him connected then BB-8 springs to life, he is totally aware of is surroundings and while you can take control he is fine on is own.
One of the fun things is to use drive mode to have him move about once you calibrate if to know back from forwards. He will even speak in is own way and give feedback which is really realistic and fun.With the messaging feature you can create content on your phone that BB-8 can see and interact with which is presented in augmented reality.There is even patrol mode where he will go about on patrol, I must say that this thing is more than a toy and is a real functioning Droid which is really cool to think we have come this far in being able to put this mush power into a toy.
